It was a big celebration for our tiniest participants. The Cornwell Early Learning Center (CELC) officially celebrated its grand opening, highlighting an important milestone in Urban Ventures' service to the community.
The ribbon-cutting event, postponed by the Covid-19 pandemic, took place as the CELC enters its second year of operation. Parents, school principals, UV supporters, and local leaders made up the nearly 100 guests joining the students in their beautiful new space.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey was among the government officials on hand to highlight the occasion. "There is no better investment than our youngest children," the Mayor shared. "Centers like this, that support kids during these most important years, are critical in building a better future for our city."

Ron and Joan Cornwell, who have supported Urban Ventures throughout the nearly thirty years of serving Minneapolis, and namesake of the center, were in attendance to cut the ribbon, with cheers from children and adults alike.
The children also enjoyed a special story time with Mrs. Cornwell, featuring a book the CELC students had written and illustrated.

During a lunch program following the ceremony, attendees heard from Raquel Diaz, parent of two CELC students, as she shared the impact of having the Cornwell Early Learning Center. Raquel described the support she received during the difficult transition time. "Until then, my kids had only ever been with me," Raquel said, "The Center's director, their teachers, the Me & My Baby staff, and my husband encouraged me by telling me that this change was going to be temporary and that leaving them was for their own good."
"They were right!" Diaz continued, "My kids used to cry when I dropped them off. Now they cry when I pick them up because they don't want to leave!"
Raquel also emphasized the difference it has made for her children and echoed the importance of an early learning center in the community. "I wish every child I know could attend this center because I see how my children have grown.”

One of the primary goals of the center is to ensure local kids are kindergarten-ready. Children who start behind often stay behind, with ages 0-4 being some of the most important in setting the trajectory of a young student. Raquel, whose eldest will begin kindergarten next year, shared that the center is already achieving its goal of preparing kids for academic success. "I am very grateful to the center for everything they have taught her to prepare her for her next stage of school."

Urban Ventures is delighted for the opportunity to celebrate the significant investment in serving our community, and we are excited for many years of transformational stories that will result from kids receiving high-quality support from the very beginning.
