The Courage to Keep Trying: A Father’s Transformation

Every parent has experienced self-doubt. Edwin is no different. Though he often comes home from work exhausted, his goal is to be present with his wife, Narcisa, and their children, Paulina, Christina, and Jose.

Driven to be the example his kids deserve, Edwin began attending classes at Urban Ventures. In the past two years, he and Narcisa have participated in a Financial Peace class, a book club on “The Five Love Languages,” retreats, and more.

“All of the classes are really good,” says Edwin. However, the class on “The Five Love Languages” was most impactful. “Based on my upbringing, it was very difficult for me to tell my wife that I loved her. I felt it, but I wouldn’t express it. Even though that is still a challenge for me, Urban Ventures has impacted my relationship with my wife because we now have better communication skills.”

While Edwin and Narcisa are in class, their 9-year-old son, Jose, participates in the Urban Ventures soccer program. He also takes guitar and karate lessons, and attends after-school tutoring and summer programming.

“When I come to Urban Ventures, I have peace and tranquility.”

Edwin lights up talking about Jose. “The classes he takes are beautiful and valuable to us. He’s a role model for him to learn. Every Monday he asks, ‘Are we going to Urban Ventures now?’ He knows that we go on Mondays.”

These Monday night’s together offer solace from the rest of the week. “When I come to Urban Ventures, I have peace and tranquility. I don’t feel like I have sorrows.” He forgets the problems he faces and the dangers around them. “The biblical messages they share relax me, too. They help me reflect on life without fear or worries.”

Being a part of the Urban Ventures community has also affirmed Edwin’s belief that “the most important thing is not just to grow economically, but to grow our minds and hearts, too. Today, people ask me, ‘What have you been doing? You’re different!’ Everything I’m expressing today I’ve always had within me, but it was sleeping. Urban Ventures has helped bring it out.”

Experiencing this transformation in his life, Edwin now invites others to Urban Ventures. “I am very grateful for Urban Ventures, and I hope God continues to illuminate this organization so that it can continue to create programs that bring hope to people.”

Today, Edwin no longer doubts his abilities. He’s learned that when it comes to being a dad, perfection is less important than perseverance. “I’ve had failures as a father,” he acknowledges. “But I always have to keep trying. I haven’t given up, and I’m thankful for God’s guidance along the way.”
