Host A Poverty Simulation

What challenges does a family in poverty face?

The Poverty Simulation is an interactive activity designed to cultivate a new understanding around poverty and its contributing factors. Groups of participants take on the role of a Minneapolis family, having to navigate decisions around housing, employment, transportation, health care, and more. It is a simulation, not a game.

The simulation is based on the real-life experiences of Urban Ventures participants. The activity includes an introduction, the simulation experience, and a debrief for participants to explore what they’ve learned, all led by Urban Ventures staff.

We can come to you, hosting the poverty simulation on-site for your organization. Or simulations can be hosted at Urban Ventures, enhancing the experience through a walking tour of campus and chance to see our neighborhood firsthand.

Poverty Simulations are great for:

  • Work teams

  • Church groups

  • Students/Classrooms

  • DEI Initiatives

  • Community groups

Due to the nature of the experience, we recommend ages 14 and up

On-Site Hosting Requirements:

  • 10-80 participants

  • 10 Tables

  • Chairs for “Family Groups” of 4-6 participants

  • 3 hours (2 hours for simulation, plus setup/teardown)

There is a fee to host a poverty simulation.

Urban Ventures periodically hosts poverty simulations that are open to anyone. We’d love to send you an invite for the next one! Join the mailing list to get notified about future poverty simulations you can attend.
