Side by Side: What Your Generosity Made Possible
The Side by Side campaign is complete. The $100,000 match has been fully met, ahead of schedule, by supporters who chose to show up for South Minneapolis families during a season that demanded it.
We are humbled and grateful.
When we launched this campaign, the need was urgent and specific. Families served by Urban Ventures were navigating the aftermath of Operation Metro Surge, and two programs in particular were at the center of recovery: Siempre Padres and Youth Mentoring. The match was designed to fuel both, and it did.
Now the work continues. And this summer, one of the clearest expressions of what Side by Side made possible will be Venture X, our Youth Mentoring summer program, which will welcome its largest group of students to date.
What Venture X looks like
Students meet three times a week for a program that is equal parts personal development and professional preparation. Every student builds a Launch Plan, a concrete roadmap for life after high school. They go on outings and field trips designed to widen their perspective and connect them with opportunities they might not encounter otherwise.
But this summer carries something additional. Some of the time will be set aside intentionally for students to address what this winter brought, while other time will be spent helping students see what is ahead of them, not just what is behind them.
Israel, Urban Ventures' Youth Mentoring Program Director, described what he is seeing among students right now:
"The storm came, the earth shook, and now we're dealing with the aftermath."
He is talking about students who are struggling academically. Students who are still trying to feel safe in their own neighborhood. Students who are not sure how to process what they have experienced, or the absence of friends and loved ones.
And in the same breath, he is grateful for the summer ahead. Because more time with students means more room to walk alongside them, not past the hard things, but through them.
That kind of processing rarely happens through a curriculum or a single conversation. It happens bit by bit, through mentors, small groups, consistency, and the presence of safe people who understand. For a lot of our students, that is where the real healing takes place.
What your generosity says
When we talk about loving our neighbors, this is what it looks like. People decide that the families in this neighborhood matter, and that showing up is not a one-time gesture. We know that the most lasting change comes from deep relationships built over time. It means not moving on when a crisis ends, and it means preparing for the longer, harder work of enduring growth.
Side by Side was never just a campaign name. It is a description of how Urban Ventures has worked for over three decades: not rescuing, not directing, but accompanying families as they build toward something lasting. Your generosity this spring said that you believe in that approach.
What comes next
We will keep reporting back. As Venture X gets underway this summer, as Siempre Padres continues to walk with families, and as students begin building their Launch Plans, we will share what your investment is making possible.
Thank you for standing with South Minneapolis. The work continues, but no one has to do it alone.
